Photojournalism student Rob Witzel won first place and $5,000 in the Hearst Photo Shoot-out in San Francisco in June. Kim Balestrieri, TEL 2002, placed third in TV news and won $3,000.

Dean Terry Hynes accepted UF awards for the year—first in Photojournalism and $10,000 and third place and $2,500 in Broadcast News. Professor John Freeman, associate professor of journalism and faculty adviser in photojournalism, also attended the presentation. Associate professor John Kaplan also advised the photo students.

UF finished first in photo with 254 points, compared to Western Kentucky’s 219 points.

UF finished in third place overall (writing, photo and broadcast news) after a tally of all individual winners’ scores.

UF photojournalists Rob Witzel, Glenn Danforth and David Cone were among the top 12 semifinalists and submitted portfolios. But only Witzel qualified for the finals.

In the three rounds of the photo competition, Cone earned $2,000, Witzel, $1,500; Danforth, $1,000; Brian Tietz and Meggan Booker, $600; and Lee Ferinden, $500. Prizes are matched to the Department of Journalism and Department of Telecommunication.
