Undergraduate enrollment declines
in
College for first time since 1985
Fall enrollment in the College of Journalism and Communications declined
for the first time in 17 years as part of a plan to reduce the number
of undergraduates.
The entrance requirement was raised to 3.0 GPA this summer, and a 500-cap
was imposed on both the Advertising and Public Relations enrollments
at the junior-senior level.
According to figures released by interim registrar Steve Pritz, ADV
1970:
Total enrollment
in the College was 3,200, compared to 3,313 one year ago (down 3.4 percent).
Overall, the UF student
body topped 47,200.
While overall
College enrollment went down, minority enrollment increased from 780
to 798 students, and the minority
percentage increased from 23.4 to 24.9 percent.
Public
Relations remains the largest undergraduate program, with 821 majors.
Advertising remains a close second (791), followed
by Journalism (708) and Telecommunication (682).
Graduate
enrollment was 193, compared to 195 one year ago. The largest master's
specialization is public relations
(33).
The
number of Ph.D. students climbed from 42 to 51.
